DOBRI DOM: WE REDUCE FOOD WASTE - 24/7!
The Institution of the City of Zagreb DOBRI DOM (the founder of the institution is the City of Zagreb) provides social services to citizens in need of social protection through daily meals in public dining halls and home delivery of hot meals for elderly and infirm citizens (Help at Home). As part of its activities, the institution also prepares meals for institutions that come from the social protection sector of the City of Zagreb, that is, for their beneficiaries. Daily behaviour according to the principles that derive from the Food Quality and Safety Management system - HACCP, quality management ISO 9001:2015, waste management system ISO 14001 and health and safety management system ISO 45001, aims to provide our citizens in need of social protection nutritionally high quality, healthy and safe meal.
The number of users of the social food service in public dining halls changes on a daily basis according to data from the competent City Office for Social Protection, Health, Veterans and Persons with Disabilities. The preparation of meals is planned based on the same records, approximately 1750 users - daily, regardless of their attendance.
The institution can reduce the amount of food waste in such a way as to distribute the surplus to users of social services (in the public dining room of the institution and the dining rooms of other humanitarian organizations, the shelter for the homeless), or to optimize the preparation of meals through normative reduction, processing of fresh food, with the condition that the quality of the service is maintained.
The institution of the City of Zagreb DOBRI DOM launched a campaign entitled "DOBRI DOM: WE REDUCE FOOD WASTE - 24/7!" consisting of two projects:
• "RECYCLING CORNER OF DOBRI DOM - 24/7!": With the goal of the most natural way of recycling through biological decomposition of green bio-waste generated during the cleaning and processing of foodstuffs and food preparation, in August 2023, the Institution started the construction of its own composting plant called "Recycling Corner of Dobri dom - 24 /7!". The composting plant started operating at the end of September 2023 (Kosnica), after training the workers on the composting process. According to the analysis made, the share of green biowaste generated during food preparation is about 7% of the total biowaste of the Institution. It is planned to dispose of/recycle about 5,500 kg of generated bio-waste into compost, for the period from the start of operation of the compost plant (October 2023) until the achievement of the goal in 2028.
• "WE REDUCE FOOD WASTE - 24/7!" (leaflet intended for citizens of all age groups, business associates and employees of the institution).
• A publication is being prepared that will be directed towards the citizens who use our social services, in terms of preserving the hot meals they take home, preserving the food items/groceries they receive from the Institution as part of the services.
The institution will continue to emphasize its commitment to sustainability and the fight against food waste. The institution took its environmental responsibility seriously, which it implemented in very well-established business goals aimed at citizens in need of social protection and meeting their basic existential needs. We have undertaken significant commitments in order to reduce the amount of food waste, fulfil important ecological promises and contribute to a more acceptable environment and our health.
